The Skinny on Steam Cleaning Your Carpets

When you have your carpet steam cleaned, you will use hot water mixed with a professional cleaning product that will be sprayed onto the carpet via a high-pressure nozzle. The water/cleaner solution will then soak all the way through the carpet, which will help bring soil, oil, and grease to the surface. Then, the vacuum pump will suck up the water, along with the dirt, leaving you with a beautiful, like new carpet again.

You can rent steam cleaning machines from many different locations; many grocery stores even carry them. By the time you rent a machine a couple of times though, you probably could have bought your own, as they are no longer as expensive as they once were. You can find many different types of steam cleaners for sale in your local discount store, all with different features, and different prices. They all work basically the same way, no matter which model you choose.

Professional steam cleaning companies have different equipment, usually a truck mounted machine, where the hot water and the vacuum motor are stored on a truck, and the only equipment that is brought into your home is the wand and hose. Many businesses use these cleaners to do their carpets, as they are much faster and more efficient than using a standard home steam cleaning machine.

Carpet producers suggest that you steam clean your carpet at least once every six months, not only for the obvious purpose of keeping it clean, but to help extend its life as well.

If you use improper equipment, or don’t know what you are doing, you can potentially damage your carpet. If you use too much water, it will take the carpet longer to dry, and could even damage the floor underneath. If you do your own carpets, you need to make sure you keep your steam cleaner in good condition, and that you know how to use it properly.

To make the most of your carpet cleaning efforts, don’t forget to remove all of the furniture out of the room, so that you can get up any dust that may have settled underneath. Before you start, make sure you vacuum the area thoroughly, to help remove as much dirt and debris as possible. Once you finish cleaning your carpet, make certain that you clean out your machine and store it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and once the carpet has completely dried, move the furniture back into the room.

Steam cleaning your carpets can be a lot of work, but is something that we should all do, and maybe even more often than every six months, if you have children, or indoor pets especially.
